A Mississippi school cancels their prom due to an 18-year-old female student wanting to bring her girlfriend as a date. The official reason of the prom cancellation is “due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events.” The student Constance McMillen was also banned from the school yearbook for wearing a tuxedo on picture day.
McMillen and the Mississippi chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union filed suit in federal court Thursday alleging the school board’s actions violated McMillen’s First Amendment rights to freedom of expression. The suit ask the judge to reverse the district’s decision and reinstate the school’s prom.
